Taka Makasar, a Sandbank in the Middle of the Ocean

From far way, out of nowhere, a small sandbank appeared in the middle of the ocean. Surrounded by crystal-clear waters and coral reefs, it looks like a ground field for angels. Its pristine white sands and turquoise waters make it so luring and appealing. This is Taka Makasar, another destination for visitors within the Komodo National Park.

Taka Makasar is a great spot for snorkeling and diving, as the water around it is home to a wide variety of marine life. Visitors can swim among colorful fish, sea turtles, and even manta rays. The shallow water around Taka Makasar also make it an ideal spot for beginners or those who are not certified divers.

It is unique. Visitors can enjoy the feeling of being surrounded by water on all sides and can take in the stunning views of the surrounding islands.

For the local Bajo people, who are traditionally known as “sea gypsies” and inherit impeccable sailing and fishing skills, Taka Makasar is an important site. This majestic sandbank represents their cultural significance and the traditional practice for ages. As important and fragile as it is, visitors should practice the sustainable tourism by not leaving any trash or damaging the coral reefs.
