Komodo Divi Site

Pulau Tengah

A tiny rocky island with steep walls de Un  isolotto roccioso dalle pareti scoscese che si tuffano nel blu e che sott'acqua creano un ambiente e una situazione di correnti molto simile a Batu Bolong. There is always immersed in the sheltered part of the current very close to the coast and down to thirty meters before rising trentacique zig zag always avoiding exposure to the currents on the east and west corners. The wall is covered with sea squirts and a number of different species of soft and hard corals that host a large variety of nudibranchs and flatworms. Almost certainly meet with some turtle, big Napoleon, jack and white tip sharks.
Visibility is generally good except for some periods of the year when the water tends to be cloudy. Snorkeling very nice although on a small area.

Distanze:  from Labuan Bajo  1h 30min

Vainilu, just at the exit of Loh Buaya bay, is one of the best muck dive of Komodo. Enter the water just in front of the beach at the west side of the bay. You will be surprise for the absence of corals and colors. Just sandy slope, broken coral and rubble. You may think you missed the spot but no, that’s the place, the best muck dive of Komodo. Explore carefully the bottom at 8 to 15 meters, you will find a collections of critters that no other sites in Komodo can offer. This is a real paradise for macro lovers a photographers. Frog fish, sea horses, any species of pipe fish, dragonets, mandarin fish and so on. Vainilu is a strange and different dive site but not to be missed if you think that  “small is nice”.

Makasser Reef (Manta Point)

North west from Komodo, near Batu Bolong and the two Tatawa , there is Karang Makassar: a strong current large 5-15 m deep shoal with just a few living corals and some rocks. This description is not very attractive for what actually is one of the most interesting places of Komodo archipelago.

In fact, it is just here that mantas use to come. For feeding maybe?  For being cleaned? Or  playing?  Why the come here is not clear, but this is definitely the place to go to spot them. It is possible to spot them here anytime, although it is easier to see them at the high tide and in strong current condition.

We will start diving down to 8-10 m at about a few hundreds meters east from a green little Island that marks the south end of Manta Point. We will be drift by the current at a short distance from the bottom not deeper than 15 m.

Sebayur Mini Wall

The dive starts from the mooring located in front of the eastern tip of the northern beach in Sebayur Kecil. We will dive down to 9-10 m depth on a sandy bottom sloping down. We will head northeast till the western corner of the wall at about 12 meters depth. Here we will start to go down to 23 -25 meters swimmin along the wall towards east. The most interesting part of the wall is between 24 and 12 mete depth and therefore there is no need to reach the sandy bottom at 32-35 depth. The presence of channels covered by corals and the small cavities in the wall form a ideal environment for groupers, sweetlips, lobsters and octopuses. Napoleon fishes and trevallies are easy to be spotted. Nudibranches of several species are common here.

On the way back to the boat we can swimm shallower along the wall and have the security stop at the mooring. Another option is to cross the beautiful coral garden that surrounds Sebayur Kecil at a depth of 10-5 meters. Mini wall is an ideal site for a night dive.

Snorkeling: beautiful all around Sebayur Kecil

Distance: 1h 15 min from Labuan Bajo

With the high tide, although the current is strong the dive is not difficult. For inexperienced divers it is a perfect start for drift diving.

In this strange place, that looks poor of species at first glance you can actually meet sea turtle, white or black tip sharks and huge trevallies. Recently bamboo sharks, the uncommon in this area,  have been spotted here.

The visibility is generally good, exception made during the rainy season (January-February)

Excellent Snorkelling with the same probabilità to see the mantas.

Sebayur Central

Starting from the mooring, we will head westward on the sandy bottom inhabited by a colony of garden eels. Sloping down towards west, we will find at 25 meters depth some rocks covered by corals and visited by many fishes. Swimming towards west along the slope on our right side, we will reach point where the slope becomes steeper and form a wall covered by gorgonians, crinoids, sponges. Here we can easily finds colourful flat worms, nudibranches, crocodile fishes, groopers lobsters, trigoni maculate and medium size tridacnas tridacne. Sometimes it happens to spot a sea eagle or a shark. We will stop on the coral garden in front of the rocky side of Sebayur to have the security stop.

Sebayur West

The dive starts at 50-60 meters from the coast near the western tip of Sebayur Kecil, going down along the slope until to reach 15-18 meters, where a sandy saddle joins the platform of Sebayur Kecil to the cliff. We will turn clockwise around the corner of the cliff and we will go east getting at a depth of 28 – 30 m along a beautiful wall covered by alcyonaria, swimming among fusiliers and surgeon fishes schools. This is the area of Sebayur Kecil where it is easier to spot big fishes, like sharks, trevallies, sea eagles and mantas. Going further east, at the end of the cliff we will head to the slope which is about 15 meters far. We will go east along the slope and we will terminate with a safety stop not far from the rocks of central Sebayur. This dive is not possible during the moon changes, when the currents are strong.
